We’ve all been there - days when you wake up feeling like your energy is at rock bottom, and no amount of coffee or positive affirmations can seem to bring it back. Whether it's from the daily grind, toxic environments, or just the overwhelming demands of life, your energy is precious, Brave Soul, and protecting it should be a top priority.
Let me share a little secret. As someone who’s a highly sensitive person (HSP) and an empath, I’ve had my fair share of struggles when it comes to protecting my energy. I remember one time recently when I attended a 3-day event. I was surrounded by amazing people and an overall positive vibe, yet with every hour that passed, I felt more and more drained. It wasn’t just the information overload or the traffic (I’m not used to driving on freeways much anymore, and that definitely didn’t help). No, what I came to realize was that I was absorbing the energy of everyone in that room, and it was slowly pulling me under.
By the end of the event, my energy was low - really low. I reached out to a close friend and fellow coach, who gently reminded me of the importance of protecting my energy and reminded me of some powerful tips that helped me reclaim it. And today, I’m going to share those same tips with you, because, Brave Soul, it’s time to take your power back.
What is Energy, and Why Is It So Important to Protect It?
Before we dive into how to protect your energy, let's start with what energy actually is. In its simplest form, energy is your life force. It’s what fuels your actions, thoughts, and emotions. And just like your phone battery, your energy can drain - sometimes without you even noticing. That’s why protecting your energy is so important, especially in environments that challenge you emotionally, physically, or mentally.
Note: Are you an empath? As an empath, you’re not just affected by your own energy but by the energy of others. You may find yourself picking up on other people’s stress, negativity, or even excitement, and without the right tools, all of that energy can weigh you down.

Why You Feel Drained: Understanding Energy Vampires and Empath Overload
Have you ever been around someone who just sucks the life out of you? They’re called energy vampires, and they’re real. These are people who feed off your energy, whether intentionally or not, and if you’re not careful, they’ll leave you completely wiped out. If you’ve ever found yourself saying, "My energy is low," chances are you’ve encountered an energy vampire or been in a draining environment.
It's not just about the people we interact with, but also the energy of spaces we inhabit. Whether it's at work, a crowded event, or even family gatherings, we can start absorbing all the emotions and stress around us. It’s like trying to breathe when the air is thick with everyone else’s drama, worries, and chaos.
How to Protect Your Energy: 5 Essential Strategies
So how do we protect our energy in a world that seems to demand so much from us? Here are five simple, effective strategies that I’ve used (and continue to use) to protect my peace and stop absorbing unwanted energy.
1. Set Boundaries (and Actually Stick to Them)
The first step to protecting your energy is getting comfortable with the word “no.” You don’t have to attend every event, take every phone call, or say yes to every request that comes your way. Setting boundaries is crucial, especially if you tend to take on the emotions of others. Whether it’s blocking energy vampires or just saying no to unnecessary obligations, boundaries are your shield.
2. Energy Clearing Rituals
Daily rituals can help you release any energy you've picked up that doesn't belong to you. Simple techniques like deep breathing, visualization, or even just spending time in nature can be incredibly grounding. Personally, I love to physically brush myself with my hands from my head to my toes and then wipe my feet. I used to do this when I came home from work - prior to entering my house - so not to bring the work energy into my home environment.
3. Surround Yourself with High-Vibration People
You know those people who light you up just by being around them? Those are your people, Brave Soul. Find them, and spend more time with them. Surrounding yourself with uplifting, positive people is a natural way to boost your energy. Pay attention to how you feel after spending time with someone - is your energy higher or lower? Let that guide who you spend time with.
4. Affirmations to Protect Your Energy
I’m a big fan of affirmations, and they can be a game-changer when it comes to protecting your energy. Here are a few of my go-to affirmations for keeping my energy in check:
-
“I am in control of my energy.”
-
“I release any energy that does not belong to me.”
-
“I am grounded, protected, and at peace.”
Try repeating these throughout the day, especially when you’re about to enter a potentially draining environment.
5. Create an Energy Shield
This may sound a little woo-woo, but stay with me here. Visualizing an energy shield around you can work wonders for keeping out the negativity of others. Imagine a protective golden bubble or light surrounding your body that keeps negative energy at bay. This is especially helpful in places like work or family gatherings where the vibes can get toxic fast. Trust me, it works.
What to Do When You Haven’t Protected Your Energy
Now, let’s say you’ve tried your best, but somehow, you’re still feeling drained. First of all, it happens to the best of us, so don’t beat yourself up. Here’s what you can do to boost your energy when it’s already been zapped.
-
Step away: Take a break from the environment that’s draining you, even if it’s just for a few minutes.
-
Ground yourself: Get outside, walk barefoot on the earth, or simply sit and breathe deeply to reconnect with your center.
-
Energy cleanse: A quick shower or bath can help wash away the energy that’s been clinging to you. Visualize the water cleansing you of all negativity.
-
Reach out for support: Sometimes, we just need someone to remind us of our strength and to help us refocus. Don’t hesitate to call a friend or a coach when you need a boost.
Don’t Forget: Sometimes It’s Medical
Of course, not all low energy is due to outside forces. If you’re feeling consistently fatigued, it’s always a good idea to check in with your doctor. Hormonal imbalances, vitamin deficiencies, and other health issues can also contribute to low energy levels. So be sure to rule those out if your energy levels don’t improve.
Final Thoughts, Brave Soul
Protecting your energy isn’t just a one-time thing - it’s a daily practice. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to feel like we’re being pulled in a thousand directions, absorbing the chaos and emotions of everyone around us. But by setting clear boundaries, engaging in energy-clearing practices, and surrounding ourselves with positive, high-vibration people, we can protect our peace and start feeling like ourselves again.
So, Brave Soul, what will you do today to protect your energy? I’d love to hear your thoughts - drop them in the comments! Your insight could be the spark that ignites someone else’s breakthrough moment.
